(Who are, who are) Who are we?

Background about D-Act

D-Act (Action for Dementia) began in 2005, upon recognizing the gap in public education about dementia, including its signs and symptoms, as well as avenues for help for dementia patients. From 2005 to 2006, D-Act sought to raise awareness amongst youths by presenting a drama performance about dementia, followed by a talk by an experienced manager of an elderly home, in various secondary schools.

In 2007, D-Act was expanded to include direct services to our beneficiary, Lions Home for the Elders. A walkathon-cum-road show was also held to raise funds for our beneficiary, and increase awareness of dementia to the general public. The event was graced by Mayor of Central Singapore District, Mr Zainudin Nordin.

D-Act sought to motivate and inspire youths in 2008, engaging students from various schools in a series of experiential learning opportunities. They attended various training workshops, as well as planned their own direct services activities, culminating in the organization and execution of a National Day lunch for the elderly of Lions Home for the Elders and Bright Hill Evergreen Home.

About D-Act 2009

This year, D-Act seeks to take an active approach to spread the message of early prevention of dementia to youths. So far, youths from 9 schools have attended courses and direct services at Lions Home for the Elders and Peacehaven Nursing Home, which have already concluded earlier on.

To reach out to more youths, there is also an ongoing publicity campaign to educate students from various secondary schools and junior colleges about dementia. The campaign will consist of 2 parts: Firstly, via the distribution of posters and postcards in schools. Secondly, through an interactive online portal (which you are on right now!) where students can engage in various activities to learn more about dementia and at the same time stand a chance to win attractive prizes.
